RIIRIS301E was current from 31 January 2020 to 1 September 2026. New enrolments go to the version below.

CURRENT VERSION · RELEASED 2 SEPTEMBER 2026

RIIRIS301 Apply risk management processes

Same title, and the trailing letter was dropped in the September 2026 release of the RII training package. Unlike the other RII recodes in that release this one is not equivalent, so holding RIIRIS301E does not by itself satisfy a requirement for RIIRIS301. The national register records this change as not equivalent.

About this qualification

RIIRIS301E covers applying risk management processes in the mining, drilling and civil infrastructure industry. The register is unusually broad about who it applies to: “an employer, line manager, supervisor, safety representative or employee” — anyone who carries out or assists in carrying out risk assessment.

It is the S1 of S123, the three-unit set the mining industry asks supervisors and leading hands to hold, alongside RIIWHS301E (S2) and RIICOM301E (S3). It is also the level below G2: RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process is the supervisory unit for those overseeing and auditing the process. This one is for those applying it.

It turns up everywhere in the traffic control family: RIISS00055, RIISS00060 and RIISS00043 all contain it, which is why 401 providers hold it.

Assessment must be in the sector's own work environment against that sector's legislation and procedures — a risk assessment learned in one industry is not automatically assessed for another.

4Core Elements
0Elective Electives

A single unit of competency. Assessment must include access to risk management policies, procedures and systems; be conducted in a safe environment; be assessed in the context of the sector's work environment and in compliance with its legislation and procedures; and confirm consistent performance across a range of relevant workplace circumstances. Simulated environments are permitted only where personal safety or environmental damage would otherwise be limiting factors.

The four elements of the unit.

  • Element 1 Plan and prepare for risk management
  • Element 2 Identify and assess risks and hazards
  • Element 3 Implement risk controls
  • Element 4 Monitor and review risk controls

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from G2?
G2 is RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process — the supervisory unit for overseeing and auditing the process. RIIRIS301E is the level below: applying risk management as part of your role.
Is this S1?
Yes. S123 is the industry shorthand for three units used across mining: RIIRIS301E (S1), RIIWHS301E (S2) and RIICOM301E (S3). S1 is this one. S123 is not itself a code on the national register.
Why do so many traffic sets contain it?
Because implementing a traffic management plan means assessing the site. RIISS00055, RIISS00060 and RIISS00043 all carry it, which is a large part of why 401 providers deliver it.
Does it transfer between industries?
The statement of attainment does. But assessment must be in the context of a specific sector's work environment and legislation, so an employer in another sector may want it re-assessed.
Is it only for supervisors?
No. The register names employers, line managers, supervisors, safety representatives and employees — anyone who carries out or assists in risk assessment.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none for this unit.
