About this qualification

RIIWHS301E covers conducting work related health and safety investigations after an incident. The register scopes it to “individuals who participate in work related health and safety investigations as part of their responsibilities”.

It is the S2 of S123 — the three-unit set the mining industry uses for supervisors and leading hands. The other two are RIIRIS301E (S1) and RIICOM301E (S3).

The five elements run the full investigation: build the plan, gather the information, evaluate it, identify courses of action, then prepare and present the report. Element 2.1 requires maintaining site security and the integrity of evidence to site and legislative requirements — the part that most often goes wrong in practice.

Assessment requires access to an incident, live or simulated from a historical one, and to site investigation plans. Where personal safety is a limiting factor a simulated environment is permitted, provided it is rigorous enough to cover the full job role.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as S2?
Yes. S123 is the industry shorthand for three units used across mining: RIIRIS301E (S1), RIIWHS301E (S2) and RIICOM301E (S3). S2 is this one.
Do I have to do all three?
That depends on your site and your role, not on the register. The three are separate units and can be enrolled separately. Ask the site what it requires.
Can I do it online?
Assessment requires access to an incident and to site investigation plans, in the sector's work environment. A simulated environment is allowed where safety is a limiting factor, but there is always a practical component.
How does it differ from RIIWHS201E?
RIIWHS201E is the entry-level unit inside Standard 11 — working safely and following WHS procedures. This is a 301: leading the investigation after something has gone wrong.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none. Licensing, legislative and certification requirements vary between states, territories and industry sectors and must be checked with the relevant body before applying the unit.
