About Standard 11
Standard 11 is the safety induction you have to do before you can work on a Queensland open-cut coal mine. No Standard 11, no site access. It is six short units.
You have to redo it every five years. Your certificate has no expiry date printed on it, but coal sites will not let you on unless your Standard 11 is less than five years old. Some sites want it more often than that. Ask the site before you book.
The rule itself is a Queensland government document — Recognised Standard 11, Training in coal mines. If you want to read it, it is here.
It counts towards two Certificate II qualifications later on if you want them, but you do not have to do anything else. Standard 11 on its own is what gets you through the gate.

What it covers

Frequently asked questions
- How long does it last?
- Five years. There is no expiry date on the certificate itself, but coal sites will turn you away if yours is older than five years. Some want it sooner. Ask the site.
- Do I need anything before I start?
- No. There are no entry requirements. You do not need experience or another ticket first.
- What about underground?
- Standard 11 covers open-cut. For underground you need one more unit — RIIERR203E, escaping a hazardous situation on your own. Do it alongside your Standard 11 and you are covered for both. Most providers who run Standard 11 can add it.
- Does it work outside Queensland?
- The training is recognised anywhere in Australia. But Standard 11 itself is a Queensland rule — other states run their own site inductions, so check what the site wants.
