About this qualification

RII20120 is a preparation qualification rather than a job-specific one. The register is explicit about it: “a pathway qualification that prepares individuals to successfully undertake a sector-specified Certificate III from the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package”.

It describes people performing “mainly routine tasks and procedures, using limited practical skills and fundamental operational knowledge”. Four core units set the baseline — communicating in the workplace, identifying environmental and heritage concerns, conducting local risk control and working safely under WHS policies — with five electives on top.

Because it feeds every sector in the package, it is the common front door to surface extraction, civil construction, resource processing and drilling. Which Certificate III you go on to is the decision that matters; RII20120 is how you get in position to make it.

Roles it maps to

RII20120 is a pathway qualification. The register frames it as preparation for a sector-specific Certificate III rather than for a named occupation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as RII20220?
No. RII20120 is a general pathway across the whole resources and infrastructure industry. RII20220 is specific to surface extraction — open cut coal, metalliferous mines and quarries. If you already know you want to work on a mine or quarry, RII20220 is the more direct start.
What does “pathway qualification” actually mean?
The register uses it to describe a qualification designed to lead into another one rather than to a job. RII20120 prepares you for a sector-specific Certificate III, and its electives are chosen with that in mind.
Can I get RII20120 through RPL?
Possibly, though at this level there is usually less prior experience to recognise. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
What are the entry requirements?
None. The national register records entry requirements for RII20120 as “Nil”, though individual providers may set their own.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
