About this qualification
RIICOM301E covers communicating information to complete work activities in the mining, drilling and civil infrastructure industry. The register scopes it to “individuals who are working in an operational, supervisory or team leader capacity”.
It is the S3 of S123 — the three-unit set the mining industry uses for supervisors and leading hands, alongside RIIRIS301E (S1) and RIIWHS301E (S2).
The performance evidence names the tasks plainly: completing a toolbox talk, completing shift reports, identifying barriers to communication and strategies to reduce them, and speaking with stakeholders to provide information and confirm meaning. Element 4 is participating in resolving conflicts.
It sits above RIICOM201E, the entry-level communication unit inside Standard 11. The 201 is communicating in the workplace; the 301 is communicating to direct work.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same as S3?
- Yes. S123 is the industry shorthand for three units used across mining: RIIRIS301E (S1), RIIWHS301E (S2) and RIICOM301E (S3). S3 is this one.
- How is it different from RIICOM201E?
- RIICOM201E is the entry-level unit inside Standard 11 — communicating in the workplace. This is the 301: planning communication, running a presentation and resolving conflict, for people directing work.
- Does it really include a toolbox talk?
- Yes. The performance evidence names completing a toolbox talk and completing shift reports as things the candidate must demonstrate, on at least two occasions.
- Can I do it online?
- Assessment requires access to communication systems and presentation media, in the sector's work environment. There is a practical component.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records none. Licensing, legislative and certification requirements vary between states, territories and industry sectors and must be checked with the relevant body before applying the unit.
