About this qualification

RII40120 is the supervisor's qualification. The register describes work that is “complex and non-routine”, where you are “responsible for the quantity and quality of the output of others” — the step from doing the work to being accountable for how a crew does it.

Four core units carry that shift: communicating information, environmentally sustainable work practices, applying and reporting on compliance systems, and applying the site risk management system. Nine electives sit on top, drawn from four groups so the qualification can be built around the operation you actually supervise.

It also has a named place in Queensland's statutory framework. For a Site Senior Executive on a surface mine or quarry employing between 6 and 20 persons, RSHQ names RII40120 by code — alongside five years' experience, two of them supervisory, and the units RIIRIS501E and BSBWHS521. RSHQ notes those two may be taken as electives inside RII40120 itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does RII40120 make me a Site Senior Executive?
No — the qualification and the statutory appointment are separate. But this is one of the few qualifications RSHQ names by code: for an SSE on a surface mine or quarry employing between 6 and 20 persons, RII40120 (or an AQF4 or greater qualification relevant to operations) is listed alongside experience requirements and the units RIIRIS501E and BSBWHS521. Requirements change and differ by state — check RSHQ for the current list.
Should I do RII40120 or RII50120?
RII40120 is for supervising a crew; RII50120 is for running the operation. Queensland's SSE competencies track that split — RII40120 is named for sites employing between 6 and 20 persons, RII50120 for sites employing more than 20.
Can I get RII40120 through RPL?
Often, yes. Recognition of prior learning assesses experience you already have against each unit rather than retraining you in it. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
What are the entry requirements?
None. The national register records entry requirements for RII40120 as “Nil”, though individual providers may set their own.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.

Apply for a Statutory Notice
