About this qualification

RII40720 covers “individuals working in supervisory and technical specialist positions in civil construction”, responsible for the quantity and quality of their own work and the output of others.

It splits two ways. The register defines two specialisations — Supervision and Operations — and the core and elective requirements of one must be met for the qualification to be awarded. The Supervision stream is 12 units: 5 core plus 7 electives, with at least three from Group A.

58 providers, against 116 at Certificate III. The market narrows sharply once you move from operating to supervising.

It is the rung between the nine-specialisation Certificate III and the Diploma of Civil Construction Design, and where the work zone supervisor skill set naturally leads.

Frequently asked questions

Which specialisation should I take?
Supervision if you will be responsible for a crew's output; Operations if you are a technical specialist working at an advanced operational level. The register requires you to complete one in full.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records entry requirements as Nil.
Why only 58 providers?
Half the number at Certificate III. Supervisory qualifications are a narrower market than operator ones, and fewer providers hold the scope.
Does my work zone supervisor skill set count?
RIISS00043 shares ground with the supervision stream, so credit is often available. The provider assesses it.
What comes next?
RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design, and above that RII60520 Advanced Diploma.
