About this qualification
RIISS00043 is the supervisor set for work zone traffic control. Five units covering supervising on-site operations, applying and monitoring compliance systems, risk management, working safely, and implementing traffic management plans.
It is a different axis to the controller and implementer ladder. Those escalate by road type; this one escalates by responsibility. A supervisor oversees the crew and the compliance rather than a bigger road.
RIIGOV401E Apply, monitor and report on compliance systems is the unit that marks it out — nothing else in the traffic family carries compliance reporting.
117 providers, making it one of the narrower sets in the family despite covering supervision across the whole of work zone traffic control.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from the implementer sets?
- Implementers escalate by road type — urban, high volume, motorway. This escalates by responsibility: supervising the crew, and monitoring and reporting on compliance.
- Do I need to have been a controller?
- The register sets no prerequisite, but the set assumes traffic management experience and most employers expect it.
- What is the compliance unit for?
- RIIGOV401E Apply, monitor and report on compliance systems. Nothing else in the traffic family includes it — a supervisor is accountable for the zone meeting its obligations, not just running.
- Does it cover designing plans?
- No. It includes implementing traffic management plans. Designing them is RIISS00056 or RIISS00063.
- Is it road-type specific?
- No. Unlike the controller and implementer sets, there is one supervisor set covering work zone traffic control generally.
