About this qualification

RII30920 covers “skilled operators in civil construction, who apply a broad range of skills in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge”.

It is really nine qualifications in one code. The register defines eight specialist streams plus a general one, and you must complete the core and elective requirements of one of them. Which stream you take changes the qualification substantially.

That includes Traffic Management as specialisation 8 — so the traffic control skill sets feed directly into this qualification rather than dead-ending.

Licensing varies. The register notes requirements “can vary between states, territories” and sectors. Ask the provider which specialisations they actually deliver before enrolling; almost none deliver all nine.

The core and elective unit requirements of one specialisation must be completed. Unit counts and requirements differ by specialisation — see the national register for the stream you want.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it have nine specialisations?
Because civil construction covers very different trades. Road marking and tunnel construction share little beyond the site. The register keeps them under one code but requires you to complete one specialisation in full.
Which specialisation should I pick?
The one matching the work you want. Traffic management, road construction and general are the broadest; tunnel and timber bridge are narrow and thinly delivered.
Do my traffic skill sets count?
Traffic Management is specialisation 8, and the RIISS traffic skill sets credit toward this qualification. How much credit is assessed by the provider.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records entry requirements as Nil.
Do all providers deliver all nine?
Almost certainly not. 116 providers hold the qualification; the specialisations they actually run will be far fewer. Ask by specialisation, not by code.
