About this qualification
RII50520 covers “designers or design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers”, performing tasks “involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement”.
Twenty units, and not one is core. That is rare. The register instead sets group minimums: at least two from Group A, two from Group B, four from Group C and four from Group D, with no more than three drawn from outside the qualification.
That structure means two holders of this Diploma may share very few units. Ask any provider exactly which groups and units they deliver before enrolling — the code alone tells you less here than on almost any other qualification.
It is where the traffic management designer skill sets lead. RIISS00056, RIISS00063, RIISS00064 and RIISS00065 all credit toward it.

Frequently asked questions
- No core units at all?
- Correct. The register sets group minimums instead: two from Group A, two from Group B, four from Group C, four from Group D, and up to three from outside. It is one of very few qualifications on this site built entirely from electives.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records entry requirements as Nil.
- Does my traffic designer skill set count?
- The traffic management designer skill sets credit toward this Diploma and related RII qualifications. How much credit is assessed by the provider.
- Why does the unit mix matter so much here?
- Because with no core, two graduates can share almost nothing. Ask which groups and units a provider actually delivers before you commit.
- What comes after?
- RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design, which had 16,027 enrolments in 2025 across 189 providers.
