About this qualification

RII60520 is the senior civil works designer qualification. The register describes “a senior civil works designer or a para-professional designer, who supports professional engineers”, doing work that is broad, specialised, complex and technical.

Only 5 of the 12 units are core, and two of those are business units rather than civil ones: managing program risk and managing team effectiveness. The register treats a senior designer as a manager as much as a technician.

BSBWHS616 Apply safe design principles to control WHS risks is core. Safe design is a legislated duty for designers under WHS law, and the qualification carries it rather than leaving it to an elective.

The elective rule is specific: 7 electives, at least 2 from Group A, at least 3 from Group B, and no more than 2 from elsewhere in the training package or another endorsed package.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an engineering degree equivalent?
No. The register describes a para-professional designer who supports professional engineers. Engineering registration is a separate university pathway.
Why are business units core?
Because the role is senior. Managing program risk and team effectiveness sit alongside the design and quality units in the core.
What is safe design?
BSBWHS616 covers applying safe design principles to control WHS risks — a designer's duty under WHS legislation to eliminate risk at the design stage.
Are there entry requirements?
