About this qualification
RII60220 is the qualification for the person who sets the system rather than the one who runs it. The register describes work that is “broad, specialised, complex and technical”, covering strategic areas and initiating activities, with responsibility for “the establishment of the site management systems, plans and policies”.
That shift shows up in the core units themselves. At Diploma level the verb is implement and maintain; at Advanced Diploma it is establish — compliance, risk and WHS management systems you build from scratch and then own. Eleven electives sit on top, weighted toward quarry and extractive operations.
It has been stable since it was first released on 12 March 2021 with RII Training Package Version 7.0, and is still on Release 1 — unusual in this package, and worth knowing if you are choosing between qualifications that have moved recently.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from RII50120?
- RII50120 is an AQF5 Diploma aimed at running an operation; RII60220 is an AQF6 Advanced Diploma aimed at establishing the systems that operation runs on. The core units track that difference almost word for word — RII50120 has you implement and maintain a risk management system, RII60220 has you establish one. RII60220 is also 14 units rather than 13, and its electives lean toward quarrying and extractive operations.
- Can I get RII60220 through RPL?
- Often, yes. Recognition of prior learning assesses experience you already have against each unit rather than retraining you in it — common at this level, where people have usually been doing the work for years. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
- What are the entry requirements?
- None. The national register records entry requirements for RII60220 as “Nil”, though individual providers may set their own.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
