RII60720 was current from 23 September 2020 to 16 March 2026. New enrolments go to the version below.

CURRENT VERSION · RELEASED 17 MARCH 2026

RII60726 Advanced Diploma of Surface Coal Mining Management

Same title, same qualification description, same packaging rules — 13 units made up of 8 core and 5 electives. Equivalence is not automatic: when RII60720 itself replaced RII60715 in 2020, the register recorded that change as not equivalent. The national register flags RII60726 as equivalent to RII60720.

What actually changed

Very little, and none of it structural. The title, the qualification description, the licensing position and the entry requirements are word for word identical. So are the packaging rules: 13 units, 8 core plus 5 electives, of which at least three must come from Group A, no more than two from Group B and no more than two from elsewhere.

What moved is at unit level — one core unit rewritten, one Group A elective recoded, and the seven BSB electives brought up to their current codes in the BSB Training Package.

Frequently asked questions

I already hold RII60720 — do I need to do anything?
A qualification that has been issued stays issued; supersession applies to what providers can deliver, not to certificates already awarded. The register also records RII60726 as equivalent to RII60720.
Can I still enrol in RII60720?
It is superseded, so providers move to RII60726 for new enrolments. How long a provider has to complete students already enrolled is set by the regulator rather than by the register — ask the provider what applies to your enrolment.
Is RII60726 harder, or a bigger course?
No. Same size, same structure, same description. One core unit was rewritten from a blasting system to an explosives safety and security management system, and the business electives were recoded to current BSB units.
Does this make me a coal mine manager?
No — the qualification and the statutory appointment are separate. In Queensland a Surface Mine Manager (Coal) holds a certificate of competency issued by the Board of Examiners, together with the practising certificate the Board requires. For a surface site senior executive at a coal mine, RSHQ names experience, a statutory legislation exam set by the Board, and RIIRIS601E or equivalent — a core unit of both versions of this qualification. Check the current list with RSHQ.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.

Apply for a Statutory Notice

Statutory safety roles at a coal mine require a certificate of competency or a notice, assessed by the Board of Examiners under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999. Holders working in statutory positions must also carry a current practising certificate. Applications are made through the RSHQ Portal.
