About this qualification
RIIRIS402E is one unit of competency: carrying out the risk management process, including planning, identifying hazards, assessing risk, and developing and implementing risk controls.
Mining knows it as G2. Civil and traffic know it as half of the Traffic Management Designer skill set. It is the same unit either way, and holding it counts in both worlds — which is unusual and worth knowing if you move between resources and roads.
The register says it “is appropriate for those working in supervisory roles overseeing and auditing the risk assessment process”. It sits above RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes, which is the operator-level version.
Mind the suffix. The current code is RIIRIS402E. Plain RIIRIS402 does not resolve on the register, and RIIRIS402D is the superseded release now down to a single provider.
Roles it maps to
Context described on the national register.

What it covers
A single unit of competency. Assessment must include access to risk management policies, processes, procedures and systems, be conducted in a safe environment, and be assessed in the context of the sector's work environment and against the legislation and procedures of that sector. Simulated environments are permitted only where personal safety or environmental damage would otherwise be limiting factors.
The five elements of the unit.
- Element 1 Plan and prepare for implementing the risk management process
- Element 2 Identify workplace hazards
- Element 3 Assess risk
- Element 4 Develop and implement risk controls
- Element 5 Monitor, review and report on the risk management process

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same as G2?
- Yes. G2 is the industry name used in the resources sector; RIIRIS402E is the code on the national register. Same unit, same statement of attainment.
- Why does a traffic designer need a mining unit?
- It is not a mining unit — it sits in the RII Resources and Infrastructure Training Package, which covers civil and roads as well as mining. Both Traffic Management Designer skill sets pair it with the plan-preparation unit.
- How is it different from RIIRIS301E?
- RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes is the operator-level unit — working within a risk management system. RIIRIS402E is the supervisory one: overseeing and auditing the process itself.
- Which code should I look for?
- RIIRIS402E, with the E. Plain RIIRIS402 does not resolve on the register and RIIRIS402D is superseded, held by one provider.
- Is it assessed on the job?
- Assessment must be in the context of your sector's work environment and against its legislation and procedures. A simulated environment is only allowed where safety or environmental damage would otherwise prevent real assessment.
