About this qualification
HLTAID011 is the first aid certificate. The register describes “the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council and other Australian national peak clinical bodies”.
It is one unit of competency, not a qualification — no AQF level, no packaging rules, usually a day. And it is the most widely held training product in the country: 2,554 providers deliver it, more than three times the largest qualification on this site.
It also appears inside 292 current qualifications — more than any other unit in the national register. Aged care, childcare, sport, hospitality, mining, maritime, hairdressing. If a job involves other people, this unit is probably in the qualification.
Unlike the White Card, there is no approved-provider register. No state regulator maintains an approval list for first aid. Any provider with HLTAID011 may deliver it, which is why this provider list comes from the national register rather than a regulator's.

Commonly held together
First aid is a family of units, not a single ticket. Which one you need depends on where you work — and the CPR component is refreshed more often than the rest.

What it covers
HLTAID011 is a single unit of competency with no prerequisites and no AQF level. Assessment must use realistic scenarios and simulations, and a simulated environment is acceptable for performance evidence. Compression and ventilation skills must be demonstrated on adult and infant resuscitation manikins following Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Assessment also requires access to an adrenaline auto-injector and other first aid equipment.
The four elements of the unit. Each has its own performance criteria on the national register.
- Element 1 Respond to an emergency situation
- Element 2 Apply appropriate first aid procedures
- Element 3 Communicate details of the incident
- Element 4 Review the incident

Frequently asked questions
- How often do I need to redo it?
- The unit itself does not expire — a statement of attainment has no end date. Safe Work Australia's model First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice recommends first aid training be refreshed every three years and the CPR component every twelve months. That is a recommendation in a code of practice, not a legislated expiry. Your employer, industry or state regulator may require something different.
- Who decides the requirements for my workplace?
- The register is explicit on this: licensing and regulatory requirements, including refresher training, “should be obtained from the relevant national, state or territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities”. Ask your WHS regulator, not your provider.
- Is there an approved provider list like the White Card?
- No. The White Card is issued under state approval — first aid is not. Any provider with HLTAID011 on its scope of registration may deliver it, so the 2,554 providers here come from the national register.
- Can I do it online?
- Not entirely. The register requires compression and ventilation skills to be demonstrated on adult and infant manikins following Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Many providers run theory online and the practical face-to-face — ask how the assessment is conducted before you book.
- Which first aid unit do I actually need?
- HLTAID011 is the general workplace one. HLTAID009 is CPR only. HLTAID012 is the version for education and care settings, which childcare and schools generally require. HLTAID015 adds advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy. Check what your employer or regulator asks for by code.
