About this qualification
HLTAID012 is first aid for infants and children. The register describes it as applying to “a range of workers within an education and care setting”, including early childhood workers and educators in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
It is the one named in legislation. The register states the unit “may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations”. No other unit in the family carries that.
Assessment is built around child and infant casualties: adult, child and infant manikins, emergency action plans, an adrenaline auto-injector training device, AED training devices, and a placebo bronchodilator.
If you work in childcare, outside school hours care or a school, this is almost certainly the code your employer means — not HLTAID011.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need this instead of HLTAID011?
- If you work in education and care, almost certainly yes. This is the unit the register connects to the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations. Ask your service by code.
- Does it cover asthma and anaphylaxis?
- Yes. The register names asthma and anaphylactic emergencies explicitly, and assessment requires an adrenaline auto-injector training device and a placebo bronchodilator.
- Is it accepted as general workplace first aid?
- That is for the employer to say. It is built around infants and children; a general workplace may want HLTAID011 instead.
- How often do I refresh it?
- The unit does not expire, but education and care services operate under their own approved-training and currency expectations. Ask your service and your regulator.
- Can I do it online?
- Not entirely. Manikin work on adult, child and infant manikins is mandatory.
