About this qualification
HLTAID010 sits between CPR and the full first aid certificate. The register describes “the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies” in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.
222,762 enrolments in Queensland in 2025 — third biggest single training product in the state, behind only CPR and Provide First Aid.
It carries more than CPR: alongside compression and ventilation on adult and infant manikins, assessment requires an adrenaline auto-injector training device, AED training devices, a placebo bronchodilator and spacer, wound dressings and a workplace first aid kit. Anaphylaxis and asthma are in scope; they are not in HLTAID009.
What it does not carry is the full incident-management scope of HLTAID011. If your workplace names a code, use that code — these three are not interchangeable.

Commonly held together
First aid is a family of five units. Which one you need is set by your workplace or regulator, not by preference — and the CPR component is refreshed more often than the rest.

Frequently asked questions
- How is it different from HLTAID011?
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the fuller workplace unit. HLTAID010 covers life-threatening emergencies — resuscitation, anaphylaxis, asthma, bleeding — without the full incident-management scope. Employers name the code they want.
- How is it different from CPR alone?
- HLTAID009 is CPR and defibrillation only. HLTAID010 adds anaphylaxis, asthma and wound management, and the assessment kit reflects that.
- How often should I refresh it?
- The unit does not expire. Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice recommends first aid training be refreshed every three years and the CPR component every twelve months. Your regulator or employer may differ.
- Can I do it online?
- Not entirely. Manikin work to ARC guidelines is mandatory, so there is always a practical component.
- Which one does my job need?
- Ask your employer or WHS regulator by code. The register directs licensing and refresher questions to the relevant state or territory authority.
