About this qualification

HLTAID009 is CPR. The register describes “the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines”, and says it applies to “all persons who may be required to provide CPR” — community and workplace alike.

It is the most-completed training product in Australia. 627,640 enrolments in Queensland in 2025 and 2,504,098 nationally. For comparison, the largest qualification in the country managed 101,138. Nothing else is close.

The reason is currency. CPR is the component that Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice recommends refreshing every twelve months, against three years for the full first aid certificate. Most of those two and a half million enrolments are people coming back.

Operating an AED is core. Element 2 requires performing CPR to ARC guidelines and operating an automated external defibrillator according to the manufacturer's instructions. Assessment requires access to AED training devices as well as adult and infant manikins.

Commonly held together

CPR is a component of the wider first aid units as well as a unit in its own right. Which one you sit depends on how often you need to refresh and what your workplace asks for.

4Core Elements
0Elective Electives

HLTAID009 is a single unit of competency with no prerequisites and no AQF level. Compression and ventilation skills must be demonstrated on adult and infant resuscitation manikins following Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Assessment must also provide access to AED training devices and personal protective equipment, and a simulated environment is acceptable for performance evidence.

The four elements of the unit. Each has its own performance criteria on the national register.

  • Element 1 Respond to an emergency situation
  • Element 2 Perform CPR procedures
  • Element 3 Communicate details of the incident

Frequently asked questions

Is it really every twelve months?
The unit does not expire — a statement of attainment has no end date. Safe Work Australia's model First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice recommends the CPR component be refreshed every twelve months. That is a recommendation, not a legislated expiry. Your employer, industry or state regulator may set something different.
Do I need this if I already have HLTAID011?
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid includes CPR. Many people hold the full first aid certificate and then sit CPR on its own each year to keep that component current, rather than repeating the whole thing.
Can I do it online?
Not entirely. Compression and ventilation must be demonstrated on adult and infant manikins to ARC guidelines, and assessment requires AED training devices. Theory is often online with the practical face-to-face — ask before booking.
Why is an AED part of CPR training?
Element 2 requires operating an automated external defibrillator according to the manufacturer's instructions. Defibrillation early makes a large difference to survival, and AEDs are now common in workplaces and public buildings.
Who decides what my workplace needs?
The register directs you to the relevant national, state or territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority for licensing and refresher requirements. Ask your WHS regulator, not your provider.
