About this qualification
UEE30820 is the electrician's qualification, and by enrolment the largest trade qualification in the country. The register describes skills to “select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises”.
It explicitly includes the Electrical Regulatory Authority Council's Essential Performance Capabilities for an unrestricted electrician's licence. That is written into the qualification description, which makes this one of the most directly licence-linked qualifications on the register.
It is also packaged differently from anything else in this directory: 1,110 weighting points, made up of 990 core and 120 general elective points. Not units, not the MEM-style points — a third system entirely, and it reflects how much ground an electrical apprenticeship covers.
Twenty-seven core units, from single and multiple path circuit problem solving through to arranging circuits, control and protection for electrical installations. HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is core, for reasons that need no explaining.
75 providers for 50,000 students — the highest demand-per-provider ratio of any qualification in this directory.

Where it leads
Certificate III is the electrical trade. There is no Certificate IV in being an electrician — what follows is a licensed speciality or the business behind the tools.

Frequently asked questions
- Does this give me an electrician's licence?
- Not by itself. The register states the qualification includes the Electrical Regulatory Authority Council's Essential Performance Capabilities for an unrestricted electrician's licence — but the licence itself is issued by your state or territory electrical regulator, and typically also requires a completed apprenticeship and a capstone assessment. Check with your state regulator.
- What are weighting points?
- The UEE package weights units by size rather than counting them. UEE30820 requires 1,110 points: 990 from core units and 120 from general electives. It is a different system again from the MEM package's points, so the numbers are not comparable across packages.
- Do I need an apprenticeship?
- The register records no entry requirements, but electrical work is licensed and an apprenticeship is effectively the pathway. You cannot do most of this qualification without supervised on-site work.
- Why only 75 providers for 50,000 students?
- Electrical training needs licensed trainers, compliant workshops and test equipment, and it is heavily apprenticeship-based through TAFE and group training. The barriers to delivery are high.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Apprenticeship pathways typically run four years.
