About this qualification

UEE40420 covers the competencies to “select, install, commission, fault find and maintain equipment and systems for the control of plant, machines and processes”.

It has the hardest entry requirement on this site. The register requires either UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or a current unrestricted electrician’s licence issued in an Australian state or territory. There is no experience alternative.

That makes it a genuine post-trade qualification rather than an entry point. It assumes you can already work safely on electrical installations and teaches you what to do with instrumentation on top.

Packaged in weighting points: 440 in total, 320 core and 120 general elective. The core is the measurement set — density and level, flow, pressure, temperature — plus reporting, WHS and environmental policy at supervisory level.

Frequently asked questions

What is the entry requirement?
UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, or a current unrestricted electrician’s licence issued in an Australian state or territory. Unlike most qualifications on this site, there is no experience-based alternative.
Can I do this instead of an electrical apprenticeship?
No. It sits on top of one. If you want instrumentation without the electrical trade, UEE31225 Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control is the standalone path.
Is there any licensing attached?
The register records no licensing, legislative or certification requirements for this qualification itself. Your electrical licence, which you must already hold, is governed separately by your state or territory.
Why only eighteen providers?
The entry requirement narrows the intake to licensed electricians, and the equipment needed to deliver it is specialised.
Where does it lead?
Instrumentation and control roles in resources, water, energy and heavy manufacturing — typically at a premium over general electrical work.
