About this qualification
UEE31225 covers the competencies to “select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain systems and devices for measurement and recording of physical/chemical phenomenon and related process control”.
This is the instrumentation trade — the people who keep a plant measuring itself accurately. Pressure, temperature, flow, density and level, and the control loops that act on them.
Packaged in weighting points: 1,060 in total, 920 core and 140 general elective. Twenty-three core units carry that 920.
The core covers PID control loops (basic and advanced), programmable controllers, human-machine interfaces and industrial networks. It is closer to industrial automation than to general electrical work, and it is one of the harder trades to staff.
Roles it maps to
Work described on the national register for UEE31225.
Where it sits
Where UEE31225 sits. It is a trade in its own right and a common dual trade for electricians.

What it covers
A total of 1,060 weighting points: 920 core weighting points plus 140 general elective weighting points. Of the electives, between 0 and 60 points may be taken from Group A and between 80 and 140 points must be taken from Group B — or all 140 elective points may be taken from Group B.
Twenty-three core units making up 920 of the 1,060 weighting points.

Frequently asked questions
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for UEE31225.
- Is this the same as being an electrician?
- No. Instrumentation is its own trade, focused on measurement and process control. It shares some core units with UEE30820 and is commonly held alongside it.
- Where is the work?
- Anywhere a process is measured and controlled — mining and resources, water, manufacturing, food processing, energy. Seventeen providers deliver it, which is thin for a trade in this much demand.
- What is a PID control loop?
- The standard method of holding a process at a set point — proportional, integral, derivative. Two core units cover setting up and adjusting them, basic and advanced.
- What comes next?
- UEE40420 Certificate IV in Electrical - Instrumentation, which requires an electrician qualification or licence.
