About this qualification

CHC30125 is the qualification that puts you on the floor of a regulated children's education and care service. The register describes educators who “support children's wellbeing, and development in the context of an approved learning framework”, using “discretion and judgment” within established policies and procedures.

It is the most prescriptive qualification in this directory. Seventeen units, and fifteen of them are core — you choose two. Compare that with BSB40520, where seven of twelve are yours to pick. Early childhood is a regulated sector and the training package behaves like one.

The core covers inclusion and diversity, health safety and wellbeing, nurturing babies and toddlers, respectful relationships, the approved learning framework, holistic development, play and learning, connecting children with the natural environment, observation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, legal and ethical obligations, working effectively in the sector, identifying children at risk, first aid in an education and care setting, and workplace health and safety.

HLTAID012 being core matters practically — it is the education-and-care specific first aid unit, not the generic one, and it carries its own currency requirements once you are working.

Frequently asked questions

Why are fifteen of seventeen units core?
Because the sector is regulated and the training package reflects that. Early childhood services operate under national law and an approved learning framework, so the qualification prescribes almost everything and leaves you two electives.
Do I need a working with children check?
Yes, in every state and territory, and providers normally require it before placement rather than before enrolment. It is set by state regulators, not by the qualification.
Is this enough to work in a childcare centre?
It is the standard entry qualification for an educator role. Staffing ratios and qualification requirements are set by the National Quality Framework and by your employer, so check what the specific role requires.
Is CHC30125 different from CHC30121?
Yes — CHC30125 is the current version. CHC30121 is superseded but still recognised for entry into the Diploma. If a provider is advertising the older code, ask why.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Mandatory work placement applies.
