About this qualification
CHC30221 is the teacher aide qualification. The register describes workers who “assist teachers and support student learning in a range of classroom settings”, completing administrative and operational tasks “under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional”.
Fifteen units, ten of them core. The core is squarely about the classroom: legal and ethical obligations in education support, contributing to planning and implementing educational programs, student development across all domains, literacy and oral language, numeracy, supporting students with additional needs, health safety and wellbeing, working with students and colleagues, and supporting responsible student behaviour.
The register attaches a note worth reading: education support workers “work mainly with students in classroom settings in primary or secondary schools, as defined by State/Territory legislation”. What you can do, and what checks you need, is set by your state's education department rather than by the qualification.
CHCEDS057 Support students with additional needs in the classroom sits in the core, not the electives — which reflects how the job has changed.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the teacher aide qualification?
- Yes, it is the standard one. The register describes assisting teachers and supporting student learning in classroom settings under a teacher's guidance.
- Do I need a working with children check?
- Yes, in every state and territory, and schools require it before placement. It is set by state legislation, not by the qualification — the register notes that education support work is defined by state and territory law.
- Certificate III or Certificate IV?
- The Certificate III supports learning under guidance. CHC40225 Certificate IV goes further into facilitating learning for students who need additional support, including disability and autism spectrum specific units. Some school systems specify one or the other.
- Can I work in a school without it?
- Requirements vary by state and by employer. Many school systems require a qualification for paid teacher aide roles; check with the education department where you want to work.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Placement in a school usually applies.
