About this qualification

CHC40225 is where a teacher aide becomes a specialist. The register describes workers who “may be involved in facilitation of learning for a range of instructional groupings, including for those students in need of additional support”, sourcing and analysing information from diverse sources.

Seventeen units, thirteen of them core — a higher proportion than the Certificate III, and the additions are specific. CHCEDS051 Facilitate learning for students with disabilities, CHCEDS056 Provide support to students with autism spectrum disorder, and CHCEDS058 Support the implementation of behaviour plans are all core here and absent at Certificate III.

That is the qualification telling you what the role has become. Classroom support at this level is largely about students with additional needs, and the training package has stopped treating that as optional.

CHCPRT025 Identify and report children and young people at risk is also core, as it is in the early childhood qualifications.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Certificate III first?
No. The register records no entry requirements for CHC40225. Many people do complete the Certificate III first, but it is not a gate.
What does the Certificate IV add?
Three core units the Certificate III does not have: facilitating learning for students with disabilities, supporting students with autism spectrum disorder, and supporting the implementation of behaviour plans. If your role involves students with additional needs, this is the qualification that covers it.
Is this required for special education support roles?
Requirements are set by state education departments and individual employers. Many specify a Certificate IV for inclusion and disability support positions — check where you want to work.
Do I need a working with children check?
Yes, and schools require it before placement. The register notes that state and territory jurisdictions may have specific regulatory requirements for education support workers.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Placement in a school usually applies.
