About this qualification
CHC42021 is where community services work becomes autonomous. The register describes workers who “deliver and support person-centred services to individuals and groups” and “may provide support, advocacy or interventions”, who “may be autonomous with limited responsibility within established parameters and may supervise others”.
Fifteen units — seven core and eight electives. The core is the casework job: facilitating client interests and rights, using communication to build relationships, recognising and responding to domestic and family violence, working with diverse people, working legally and ethically, developing networks and partnerships, and safe work practices.
CHCDFV001 being core matters. Recognising and responding appropriately to domestic and family violence is required of everyone holding this qualification, not left to an elective — the same as at Diploma level.
Unlike CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support, this one has no entry requirements. You can start here.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a Certificate III first?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for CHC42021. That is worth knowing, because the Certificate IV in Disability Support — CHC43121 — does have hard entry requirements. People often assume the two work the same way.
- Certificate IV or Diploma?
- CHC42021 is casework and advocacy with limited responsibility inside established parameters. CHC52025 Diploma of Community Services adds case management, service program development and supervision. The Diploma is twenty units against fifteen.
- Is this a counselling qualification?
- No. It covers advocacy, support and intervention within community services. Counselling has its own qualifications and professional requirements.
- Can I get CHC42021 through RPL?
- Often, yes, particularly for people already doing casework without formal qualifications. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider, and placement requirements still apply.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
