About this qualification

CHC43121 is the qualification for disability support workers who have moved past supervision. The register describes people who “empower people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing”, and who “work without direct supervision” and “may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team”.

It is a short qualification — ten units, seven core and three electives — but a demanding one. The core covers person-centred behaviour support, community participation, skills development, complex needs, legal and ethical compliance, mental health, and work health and safety.

It is also one of the few qualifications on this site with real entry requirements. The register requires completion of CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), or CHC33015 with the disability specialisation, or CHC30408 Certificate III in Disability plus a bridging skill set. You cannot start here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enrol without a Certificate III?
No. This is one of the few qualifications here with entry requirements written into the register. You need CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), or CHC33015 with the disability specialisation, or CHC30408 Certificate III in Disability plus the entry skill set.
Why does the disability qualification include a mental health unit?
Because the two overlap constantly in practice. CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues is a core unit, reflecting how often disability support workers encounter co-existing mental health needs.
Ten units seems short for a Certificate IV.
It is, deliberately. It builds directly on a Certificate III rather than starting from scratch, so it covers only what changes when you move to working unsupervised and possibly coordinating a small team.
Can I get CHC43121 through RPL?
Often, yes, for people already doing the work. The entry requirements still apply, and some units have prerequisites. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
