About this qualification
SIS20321 covers conducting pre-planned coaching sessions with foundation level participants in a specific sport. The register aims it squarely at community clubs: “assistant coaching roles working or volunteering at community based sports clubs and organisations”.
At 7 units it is the smallest qualification in this family — 3 core and 4 electives. That is deliberate: it is designed to be achievable by people who coach in their own time.
The core is only three units, and one of them is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. The other two are working safely and working in a community coaching role.
The register describes “a defined and limited range of basic coaching skills” used on mainly routine and repetitive tasks. It is a starting point for volunteers, not a pathway to professional coaching on its own.

Frequently asked questions
- Is seven units really a full qualification?
- Yes. It is a Certificate II on the national register with 3 core and 4 elective units. The size reflects the job it describes: pre-planned sessions with foundation level participants.
- Does it include first aid?
- Yes. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is one of the three core units.
- Will it get me a paid coaching job?
- The register describes assistant coaching and volunteering at community clubs. Paid and higher-level coaching generally needs sport-specific accreditation from the national sporting organisation as well.
- Is it sport specific?
- The qualification is generic; the coaching is applied to a specific sport. Providers usually run it against one sport, so ask which.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records none for this qualification.
