About this qualification

SIS30321 is the qualification for group and gym fitness instructors. The register is specific about the limits: they plan and deliver group exercise sessions and build gym programs for individuals “where the level of personalised instruction and ongoing client monitoring is limited”, working in predictable environments under general supervision.

It is the entry gate to personal training. SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness will not take you without five of this qualification's units already held — HLTAID011, HLTWHS001, SISFFIT032, SISFFIT033 and SISFFIT035. That is a hard entry requirement written into the register, not a provider preference.

First aid is core, not elective. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is one of the 11 core units, so every holder of this qualification carries a current first aid statement of attainment as part of it.

Fifteen units in total: 11 core and 4 electives, of which 2 must come from a named list. The elective bank is large (21 units), which is why two Certificate IIIs in Fitness can look quite different on paper.

Frequently asked questions

Is this enough to be a personal trainer?
No. Personal training is SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness. This qualification covers group exercise and gym-based programs where personalised instruction and ongoing monitoring are limited.
Do I need it before the Certificate IV?
You need five of its units: HLTAID011, HLTWHS001, SISFFIT032, SISFFIT033 and SISFFIT035. Holding the full Certificate III covers that, and is the usual route.
Does it include first aid?
Yes. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is a core unit, so it is part of the qualification rather than something you arrange separately.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none for this qualification.
How many providers deliver it?
95 providers can deliver it. A large share of the rest of the sector's scope sits with schools delivering it to their own students.
