About this qualification

SIS20122 covers assisting with the delivery of sport and recreation activities and completing routine customer contact and maintenance duties. The register is plain that this is entry level: holders “work under direct supervision to complete mainly routine tasks”.

It is a short qualification — 10 units, 6 core and 4 electives — which is why it is heavily used in schools as a VET-in-schools offering alongside standalone delivery.

The core covers the practical floor of the industry: assisting with recreation sessions, providing quality service, responding to emergency situations, maintaining activity equipment, and keeping current with industry knowledge.

It applies across the whole sector — commercial, not-for-profit, community and government organisations — rather than to one setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this enough to work unsupervised?
No. The register scopes it to working under direct supervision on mainly routine tasks. Certificate III is the level where you work with some independence.
Does it lead to fitness work?
Not directly. Fitness runs through SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness. This is the recreation side of the same family, and it is common ground for both.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none for this qualification.
Why do so many schools deliver it?
At 10 units it fits a school timetable, so it is widely offered as VET in schools. Those providers deliver to their own enrolled students, which is why this page lists providers you can approach directly.
