About this qualification

SIS40221 is the personal training qualification. The register describes trainers who develop, instruct and evaluate personalised exercise programs for “generally healthy and low risk clients”, working independently, and referring higher-risk clients to medical or allied health professionals.

It has a hard entry requirement. You must already hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety, SISFFIT032, SISFFIT033 and SISFFIT035, or the units they superseded. In practice that means completing SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness first.

Seventeen units: 10 core and 7 electives, drawn 2 from Group A, 2 from Group B and 3 from anywhere. The elective bank runs to 43 units, so specialisation happens through the electives rather than through a named stream.

The core is where the step up shows: personalised programming for body composition goals, for older clients and for adolescent clients are three separate core units, alongside exercise science principles and supporting behaviour change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enrol without a Certificate III?
Only if you already hold the five named units: HLTAID011, HLTWHS001, SISFFIT032, SISFFIT033 and SISFFIT035. Otherwise no — this is an entry requirement on the register, not a provider rule.
What is the difference from Certificate III?
Certificate III is group and gym instruction with limited personalisation. Certificate IV is one-to-one personal training: programming for individuals, including older and adolescent clients, and working independently.
Can I train anyone once qualified?
The register scopes it to generally healthy, low-risk clients. Clients with higher health risks are referred to medical or allied health professionals.
Is there a combined Certificate III and IV?
They are separate qualifications on the register. Many providers sell them as one enrolment, but you are completing two, and the Certificate III units must come first.
How many providers deliver it?
64 providers can deliver it — fewer than the Certificate III, which is what the entry requirement does to a market.
