About this qualification
BSB50120 is the generalist's diploma. The register describes people with “frontline management accountabilities” carrying out “moderately complex tasks in a specialist field of expertise”, who “may possess substantial experience in a range of settings, but seek to further develop their skills across a wide range of business functions”.
That last clause is the point. BSB50120 is chosen by people who already know one part of a business well and need the rest — budgets, resources, sustainability policy, communication, critical thinking in others.
Five core units and seven electives, the widest elective allowance of any qualification in this set. Two electives must come from Group A; the other five can be drawn from Groups A to I. It is the most configurable business qualification on the register, which makes the provider's packaging the whole decision.
Roles it maps to
BSB50120 is a cross-industry qualification. The register describes roles rather than a single occupation.

Frequently asked questions
- Business or Leadership and Management?
- BSB50120 broadens you across business functions — budgets, resources, policy. BSB50420 deepens you in leading people. Both are AQF5 diplomas of twelve units, and they share almost no core units, so the choice is about what you want to be better at.
- Why are there so many electives?
- Seven of twelve, more than any other qualification in this set. The register frames BSB50120 as a qualification for people developing “across a wide range of business functions”, so the elective bank is deliberately broad. Ask any provider for their exact list.
- Can I get BSB50120 through RPL?
- Often, yes. Recognition of prior learning assesses experience you already have against each unit rather than retraining you in it — common for people who have managed for years without formal qualifications. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
- What are the entry requirements?
- None. The national register records entry requirements for BSB50120 as “Nil”, though individual providers may set their own.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
