About this qualification

BSB40120 is the qualification for the point where a job stops being purely operational. The register describes “a mix of specialist and moderately complex administrative or operational tasks”, performed by people who “may have supervisory performance accountabilities” and who apply solutions to “a defined range of unpredictable problems”.

Twelve units: six core and six electives. The cores are deliberately general — critical thinking, digital collaboration, business relationships, WHS policies, complex documents and workplace communication — because BSB40120 is used across every industry rather than one.

That generality is also the catch. Two of the six electives must come from Group A, and the remaining four can be drawn from Groups A to J, which span everything from finance to procurement to customer engagement. The elective set is what turns a generic code into a qualification that means something for your role.
