Certificate IV or Diploma?

BSB40520 is for emerging leaders taking responsibility for a team. BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management is for people already managing, with broader accountability. Most people do the Certificate IV first, and around a third of the providers delivering one deliver both.

About this qualification

BSB40520 is where people stop being good at the job and start being responsible for other people doing it. The register describes “developing and emerging leaders and managers” who, “as well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, are likely to provide leadership, guidance and support to others” and may have “responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of teams”.

Twelve units — five core and seven electives. The core is the first-line manager's job in five parts: demonstrating leadership, leading workplace relationships, coordinating operational plans, applying communication strategies, and leading and facilitating a team.

Four of the seven electives must come from Group A, which keeps the qualification pointed at management rather than letting it drift into whatever a provider happens to offer.
