About this qualification
BSB30120 is the entry business qualification. The register describes people “establishing their own work performance”, carrying out “routine procedural, clerical, administrative or operational tasks that require technology and business skills”.
Thirteen units — six core and seven electives. The core is unusually contemporary for a Certificate III: critical thinking in a team, supporting personal wellbeing at work, sustainable work practices, inclusive work practices, workplace safety and workplace communication.
It also carries four named specialisations — Administration, Customer Engagement, Medical Administration, and Records and Information Management — each printed on the testamur. Medical Administration in particular is a distinct job market, and worth choosing deliberately.
558 providers hold it, which makes this one of the most crowded qualifications in the country. The specialisation is how you narrow the field.

Frequently asked questions
- Which specialisation should I choose?
- The one matching the job. Medical Administration and Records and Information Management are distinct job markets; Administration and Customer Engagement are broader. The specialisation is printed on your certificate, so it is what an employer sees.
- 558 providers — how do I choose?
- Start with the specialisation, then delivery mode and cost. The qualification itself is identical wherever you do it; what differs is which electives a provider packages and how they deliver.
- Is this enough for an office job?
- It is the standard entry qualification for administrative roles. The register describes it as suiting people establishing their own work performance, carrying out routine procedural, clerical, administrative or operational tasks.
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records entry requirements for BSB30120 as “Nil”, though providers may set their own.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
