About this qualification
BSB20120 is where a working life starts. The register is unusually direct about its audience: entry-level business services roles, and “individuals who have not yet entered the workforce, and are developing the necessary skills in preparation for work”.
Ten units, five core: applying communication skills, working effectively in business environments, planning and applying time management, participating in sustainable work practices, and contributing to the health and safety of self and others.
Read that list again and notice what it is not. There is no software, no industry, no specialisation. It is the set of things every job assumes you already know — which is precisely why it exists as a qualification.
430 providers deliver it, many through schools. It feeds directly into BSB30120 Certificate III in Business and, from there, into the rest of the Business Services package.

Frequently asked questions

- What can I do with it?
- On its own, entry-level administrative and business support roles. Its bigger value is as a stepping stone: it feeds directly into BSB30120 Certificate III in Business.
- Is it the same as Certificate II in Business?
- BSB20120 Workplace Skills replaced the old Certificate II in Business. If you are looking at an older code, check the register for what is current.
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records entry requirements as Nil.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Many students complete it at school at no cost.
