About this qualification
BSB50820 is one of the most portable qualifications in this directory. The register describes individuals applying project management “in a variety of contexts, across a number of industry sectors”, in roles including Project Manager and Project Team Leader, “responsible for achieving project objectives”.
Twelve units, eight core. The core is a clean sweep of the project management knowledge areas: scope, time, quality, cost, human resources, information and communication, risk, and integration. If you have worked with PMBOK, the mapping is not subtle.
That structure is why the qualification travels. The eight core units are industry-agnostic, and the four electives are where it gets pointed at construction, IT, community services or whatever sector you work in.
318 providers hold it, which puts it among the most competitive markets here — and makes the four electives the thing worth asking about.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this recognised for PMI or AIPM membership?
- Those are separate credentials with their own requirements. The core units map closely to the standard project management knowledge areas, which is why the qualification is often used as supporting evidence — but recognition is decided by those bodies, not by the training package.
- Project Management or Leadership and Management?
- BSB50820 is about delivering defined pieces of work to scope, time and cost. BSB50420 is about running a team or function on an ongoing basis. Different jobs, and people frequently hold both.
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records entry requirements for BSB50820 as Nil, though providers may set their own and most students arrive with work experience.
- Can I get BSB50820 through RPL?
- Often, yes, and experienced project managers usually have strong documentary evidence. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. With 318 providers it is worth comparing more than one quote.
