About this qualification

RIIERR302E covers responding to local emergencies and incidents — implementing response plans, monitoring the situation, taking precautionary measures and supporting formal relief.

It is the odd one out in Standard 11. The other five units are 201-level; this is a 302. The induction deliberately includes a higher-level emergency response competency, because a mine emergency does not wait for a supervisor to arrive.

The register scopes it to “site-based roles in the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, extractive, and civil infrastructure environments” — broader than RIIERR205D, which is mining only.

Element 1 requires notifying required internal and external personnel according to workplace procedures. Knowing who to call, and in what order, is part of the competency.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this a 302 unit inside an entry-level skill set?
Because emergency response cannot wait for a supervisor. Standard 11 deliberately carries a higher-level emergency competency alongside five 201-level units.
How does it differ from RIIERR205D?
RIIERR205D is initial response first aid, scoped to coal and metalliferous mining. RIIERR302E is broader emergency and incident response, and covers drilling, extractive and civil infrastructure as well.
Is it part of Standard 11?
Yes, one of the six units in RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set.
Can I do it online?
Assessment requires access to emergency equipment and PPE, in the sector's work environment. There is always a practical component.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none, though licensing and regulatory requirements vary by state and must be sourced from state jurisdictions before applying the unit.
