About this qualification

RIIWHS201E is the entry-level work health and safety unit for the resources and infrastructure industries. It applies to operational roles working under supervision.

It is one of two units that turn up almost everywhere in this package. Standard 11, the Road Labourer skill set, Certificate II in Civil Construction, the broader traffic controller and implementer sets — this unit is in all of them, paired with RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace.

Element 2 carries something the health and construction equivalents do not: obtaining permits and clearances before work is carried out. Permit-to-work culture is baked into resources and infrastructure from the entry unit up.

It is not interchangeable with CPCCWHS2001 (construction) or HLTWHS001 (health and community services). Three packages, three codes, same broad idea.

4Core Elements
0Elective Electives

A single unit of competency. Assessment must include access to personal protective equipment, related equipment and relevant documentation; be conducted in a safe environment; be assessed in the context of the sector's work environment and against its legislation and procedures; and confirm consistent performance across a range of workplace circumstances. Simulated environments are permitted only where personal safety or environmental damage would otherwise be limiting factors.

The four elements of the unit.

  • Element 1 Access and apply site safety procedures
  • Element 2 Apply personal safety measures
  • Element 3 Apply site emergency procedures
  • Element 4 Identify and report hazards and incidents

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a White Card?
No. CPCWHS1001 is the construction industry induction that gets you site access. RIIWHS201E is the resources and infrastructure WHS unit. Many people in civil work hold both.
Which WHS unit does my employer want?
It depends on their training package. RIIWHS201E for resources and infrastructure, CPCCWHS2001 for construction, HLTWHS001 for health and community services. Ask by code.
Where is it used?
Standard 11, the Road Labourer skill set, the broader traffic controller and implementer sets, Certificate II in Civil Construction and much of the RII package.
Does it cover permits?
Yes. Obtaining permits and clearances before work is carried out sits in element 2 — unusual for an entry-level unit and characteristic of resources work.
Can I do it online?
Assessment must be in the sector's work environment, or a realistic simulation where safety would otherwise prevent it.
