About this qualification

RIICOM201E covers communicating in the workplace in the resources and infrastructure industries. Despite the plain title it is a technical unit, not a soft-skills one.

It is about communication equipment and systems. Identifying and accessing equipment and system components, applying equipment safety procedures, and selecting the appropriate method for the situation. On a mine site or a road work zone that means radios, hand signals and site protocols.

Like RIIWHS201E it appears almost everywhere in the package — Standard 11, Road Labourer, the traffic controller and implementer sets, Certificate II in Civil Construction. The two travel as a pair.

The register records no licensing, legislative or certification requirements for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a soft-skills unit?
No. It covers communication equipment and systems — identifying components, applying safety procedures for them, and choosing the right method. On site that is radios and site protocols.
Where is it used?
Standard 11, the Road Labourer skill set, the traffic controller and implementer sets, and Certificate II in Civil Construction, among others.
Is there any licensing attached?
No. The register records no licensing, legislative or certification requirements for this unit.
Why does it pair with RIIWHS201E?
Because together they are the minimum for working safely on a resources or infrastructure site: know the safety procedures, and be able to communicate them. Most RII entry-level sets carry both.
Can I do it online?
Assessment must be in the sector's work environment with access to the actual communication equipment. Ask the provider how they run it.
