About this qualification

HLT57715 is the qualification for practice managers. The register's description is one of the shortest on the whole register, and all the more precise for it: “business or practice managers who manage the operation of small to medium sized health practices”.

Fifteen units, ten of them core — a high proportion, and a sign of a qualification with a defined job rather than a configurable one. The core spans both halves of the role: the business half in customer service, budgets and financial plans, people performance and risk; and the clinical-adjacent half in medical terminology, health billing and accounting, infection prevention and control, and work health and safety.

That combination is what makes it unusual. A practice manager has to run a business and understand the clinical environment it operates in, and the core insists on both.

52 providers hold it — a narrow field for a qualification with this much demand behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a clinical background?
No. The register records no entry requirements, and the qualification is aimed at business or practice managers rather than clinicians. The core includes medical terminology precisely because it does not assume you arrive with it.
Is this the same as a Diploma of Leadership and Management?
No. BSB50420 is general management across any industry. HLT57715 is management of a health practice specifically — billing systems, medical terminology and infection control are core here and absent there.
How do I get into practice management?
Medical reception and administration is the common route, and BSB30120 Certificate III in Business has a Medical Administration specialisation built for it. This diploma is the step up from that.
Can I get HLT57715 through RPL?
Often, yes, and experienced practice managers usually have strong evidence across the business units. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
