About this qualification

HLT33115 is the qualification for the people who make a hospital or clinic work around the clinicians. The register describes workers who “provide assistance to health professional staff for the care of clients”, involving “direct client contact under supervision”.

Fifteen units: seven core and eight electives. The core is deliberately general — medical terminology, organising personal work priorities, communicating in health or community services, working with diverse people, recognising healthy body systems, infection prevention and control, and workplace health and safety.

The specialisation is where it becomes a job. Two named streams appear on the testamur: Assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care and Operating Theatre Technician. Those are genuinely different roles with different employers, and the eight electives decide which one you hold.

HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems as core is what makes this a health qualification rather than an administrative one — it assumes you will be near patients.

Frequently asked questions

Which specialisation should I choose?
The job decides it. Assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care leads to ward-based Assistant in Nursing roles; Operating Theatre Technician leads to theatre work. Both appear on the testamur, so ask a provider which they deliver before enrolling.
Is this the same as an aged care qualification?
No. CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support is aged care, disability and home support. HLT33115 is health services — hospitals and clinics, assisting health professionals. They share two core units and lead to different sectors.
Do I need immunisations or a police check?
Almost always, and health services usually require them before placement. These are set by employers and health departments, not by the qualification.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records none for HLT33115, and no licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to the qualification itself.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Clinical placement usually applies.
