About this qualification
HLT54121 is the pathway to registration as an enrolled nurse. The register describes “an enrolled nurse working under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered nurse”, providing care “across the health care continuum and at all stages of life”.
Read this before you enrol anywhere. The register states that to be eligible to apply for registration and practise in Australia, you must complete a Diploma of Nursing program accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. Holding the qualification is not sufficient on its own — the programme has to be ANMAC accredited, and registration is granted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Twenty-five units, twenty of them core — the most prescriptive structure in this directory outside the trades. Clinical assessment, wound management, administering and monitoring medicines and intravenous therapy, mental health care, legal and ethical parameters, and nursing within the Australian health care system.
Fifty-four providers nationally. Clinical placement capacity and ANMAC accreditation both constrain who can deliver it.

Frequently asked questions
- Does this qualification make me an enrolled nurse?
- Not by itself. The register is explicit: to be eligible to apply for registration you must complete a Diploma of Nursing program accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. Registration is then granted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Confirm a provider's ANMAC accreditation before enrolling — this is the single most important check on this page.
- How do I check a provider is ANMAC accredited?
- Ask them directly and verify with ANMAC. Being on the national register with HLT54121 is not the same as holding accreditation for the programme.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records none for the qualification, but providers set substantial entry conditions of their own — typically English language, numeracy and literacy testing, immunisation, police checks and a working with children check.
- How much clinical placement is involved?
- Considerable, and it is a major part of the programme. Placement capacity is one reason only fifty-four providers deliver it. Ask how placement is arranged before you enrol.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. This is typically an eighteen-month to two-year programme.
