About this qualification

CPP31418 covers the close protection operative, “responsible for providing security services to protect the safety and security of principals who may be celebrities, political figures, very important persons (VIPs) or other persons requiring close protection services”.

The register is explicit that it “provides an occupational licence outcome of a close protection operative” — a distinct licence class from general security officer work in most jurisdictions. Licensing is administered by each state and territory.

Fourteen units, eight core. Three of the core units are shared with Certificate III in Security Operations — negotiation, response to security risk situations, and coordinating quality service — and the rest are specific: planning close protection services, implementing them, controlling persons using empty hand techniques, and advanced first aid rather than standard.

That advanced first aid unit is a fair signal of the work. Close protection operatives are often the first and sometimes the only responder available to their principal.
