About this qualification
CPP20218 is the entry qualification for security work. The register describes a security officer “responsible for maintaining safety and security by patrolling, protecting or guarding property while unarmed, and screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing persons from premises”.
It has no electives. Fourteen units, all core — the only qualification on this site with nothing to choose. Everyone who holds CPP20218 has done exactly the same training, which is unusual and deliberate.
The register states the qualification “is intended to align with the following occupational licencing outcomes: security officer – unarmed guard; security officer – crowd controller”. Security licensing is administered separately by each state and territory and is not part of the qualification itself.
The units are unmistakably practical: patrolling, screening people and personal effects, controlling access and exit, managing crowd behaviour, dealing with intoxicated persons, removing people from premises, escorting valuables, basic defensive techniques, and first aid.

Frequently asked questions
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for CPP20218.
- Does this give me a security licence?
- No. The register says the qualification is intended to align with the unarmed guard and crowd controller licensing outcomes. Licensing itself is issued by your state or territory regulator, which sets its own separate requirements. Check with the regulator in the state you want to work in.
- Why are there no electives?
- The training package has fixed all fourteen units. Because the qualification maps to a licensing outcome, the content is standardised rather than left to providers and students to shape.
- Can I do this online?
- Parts of it, potentially — but units like defensive techniques, patrolling and screening require practical demonstration. Ask each provider how they deliver and assess those units.
- What comes next?
- CPP31318 Certificate III in Security Operations, which requires you to already hold a current security officer licence, or CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations.
