About this qualification
AUR31220 is the qualification for people who keep earthmoving and materials handling equipment running. The register describes work “on a variety of mobile plant machinery in the automotive retail, service and repair industry”.
Thirty-six units, but the split is unusual: nine core and twenty-seven electives. That is the largest elective allowance of any trade qualification here, and it exists because the machinery diverges so sharply.
The specialisation is compulsory. You must complete all units in one of three specialist groups: Mobile Plant Equipment, Forklift, or Elevating Work Platform. There is no general award.
AURTTA118 Develop and carry out diagnostic test strategies and AURTTA006 Inspect and service hydraulic systems are both core — hydraulics and systematic diagnosis are what distinguish plant work from vehicle work.
Forty providers nationally. If you run a mine, quarry or civil operation, this is the qualification behind your maintenance crew.
Roles it maps to
Roles described on the national register for AUR31220.
Where it leads
Mobile plant is its own trade with nothing above it in the family. The usual next steps are a second automotive trade or the resources sector.

Frequently asked questions
- Which specialisation should I choose?
- The machinery you will work on. Mobile Plant Equipment covers earthmoving and heavy plant, Forklift covers materials handling, and Elevating Work Platform covers access equipment. You must complete one group in full — there is no general award.
- Is this the mining plant mechanic qualification?
- It is the usual one for maintaining mobile plant. Note the distinction from RII30820 Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations, which is about operating plant, not maintaining it.
- Twenty-seven electives?
- Yes, but they are not free choice — a whole specialist group must be completed. The large elective count reflects how much a specialisation covers, not how much latitude you have.
- Do I need an apprenticeship?
- Not as a register requirement. In practice this is apprenticeship territory, and the workshop access required makes other routes difficult.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Apprenticeship pathways typically run four years.
