About this qualification

AUR20520 is the step before the trade. The register describes individuals who “perform a range of servicing tasks in the automotive retail, service and repair industry” — servicing rather than diagnosing.

Twenty units, thirteen core. Read the verbs against AUR30620 and the difference is exact: here you inspect and service braking, cooling, steering, suspension, engines, final drive assemblies and drive shafts. At Certificate III you diagnose and repair them.

One core unit bridges the two — AURATA001 Identify basic automotive faults using troubleshooting processes. That is the beginning of the diagnostic work the trade qualification is built around.

Only 57 providers deliver it, against 219 for the Certificate III — most people go straight into the trade qualification through an apprenticeship.

Frequently asked questions

Does this make me a mechanic?
No. This is servicing — inspecting and servicing systems. The mechanic's trade qualification is AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, where the same systems are diagnosed and repaired.
Should I do this before the Certificate III?
Not necessarily. Most people enter the trade directly through an apprenticeship. This qualification suits school-based programmes, career changers testing the water, and roles that are genuinely servicing rather than repair.
Why do so few providers deliver it?
Fifty-seven, against 219 for the Certificate III. The apprenticeship pathway dominates automotive training, so the Certificate II is a smaller market.
Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records entry requirements as Nil.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
