About this qualification

AUR30320 is the auto electrician's qualification. The register describes individuals who “service, diagnose and repair electrical systems and components in vehicles in the automotive electrical service and repair industry”.

Thirty-two units, twenty-one of them core — a heavy core for a trade with this much technical range. Soldering wiring and circuits, automotive electrical circuits and wiring systems, vehicle lighting, wiring harnesses and looms, ancillary electronic systems, instruments and warning systems.

What marks it out from the mechanical trades is that it carries both engine management cores: spark ignition and compression ignition. A mechanic learns one; an auto electrician learns both, because the electronics do not care what the engine burns.

AURETK002 Use and maintain electrical test equipment being core is the tell. This is a diagnostic trade built on instruments rather than spanners — and it is where automotive work is heading as vehicles electrify.

Frequently asked questions

Auto electrician or mechanic?
Different trades. A mechanic diagnoses and repairs mechanical systems for one engine type. An auto electrician works on electrical and electronic systems across both spark ignition and compression ignition — both engine management cores are in this qualification.
Does it cover electric vehicles?
Not in the core, which is conventional automotive electrical work. EV and hybrid high-voltage work has its own units and qualifications. Ask a provider what their eleven electives cover if that is your interest.
Is this an electrical licence?
No. Electrical licensing is a separate state-regulated matter covering fixed wiring and mains voltage. This qualification is automotive electrical work — different scope, different regulator.
Do I need an apprenticeship?
Not as a register requirement. In practice it is an apprenticeship trade with twenty-one practical core units.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
