About this qualification
AUR30620 is the qualification behind the job most people mean when they say “mechanic”. The register describes individuals who “perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive retail, service and repair industry”.
Thirty-six units — twenty core and sixteen electives. That elective allowance is unusually generous for a trade, and it is how the qualification keeps pace with a fast-moving vehicle fleet.
The core is diagnostic rather than procedural. Eight of the twenty units begin with the word diagnose: engine management, charging systems, starting systems, ignition, hydraulic braking, steering, suspension, engines and emission control. A modern mechanic is a fault-finder first.
AURETR112 Test and repair basic electrical circuits and AURETR123 Diagnose and repair spark ignition engine management systems being core says where the trade has gone — electrical and electronic competence is no longer optional.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an apprenticeship?
- Not as a register requirement — entry requirements are recorded as Nil. In practice this is overwhelmingly an apprenticeship qualification, and the diagnostic core assumes access to a working workshop.
- Does it cover electric and hybrid vehicles?
- Not in the core. The core is spark ignition, charging, starting and ignition systems. Electric and hybrid work sits in the elective bank and in separate qualifications — ask any provider what their sixteen electives cover before enrolling.
- Light vehicle or heavy vehicle?
- This is light vehicle. Heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology is a separate qualification with its own code.
- Can I get AUR30620 through RPL?
- Often, yes, for experienced mechanics without formal qualifications. Practical assessment is substantial. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Apprenticeship pathways typically run three to four years.
