About this qualification

RIIWHS202E covers entering and working in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries. It applies to operational roles working under supervision.

The permit is the point. Element 1 requires obtaining and confirming authorisation of a confined space entry permit that meets regulatory requirements. No other short course on this site is built around a document like that.

So is the stand-by person. The register requires obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures with the stand-by person before entry. Confined space work is never a solo activity, and the unit is written that way.

Licensing varies by state. The register says requirements “can vary between states, territories and industry sectors” and directs you to check with the relevant body. There is no national confined space licence.

Simulated environments are permitted only where personal safety or environmental damage would otherwise be limiting factors.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national confined space licence?
No. The register says licensing and certification requirements vary between states, territories and industry sectors, and directs you to check with the relevant body before applying the unit.
What is the entry permit?
A confined space entry permit meeting regulatory requirements. Obtaining and confirming its authorisation is written into element 1 — you do not enter without one.
What is a stand-by person?
Someone outside the space maintaining communication and ready to initiate rescue. The unit requires you to obtain and interpret emergency procedures with them before entry.
Does it expire?
The statement of attainment does not. Employers and principal contractors commonly set a refresh cycle — ask the site.
Can I do it online?
No. Assessment must occur in the sector's work environment, or a realistic simulation where safety would otherwise prevent it.
