About this qualification
RIIERR205D covers applying initial response first aid in coal and metalliferous mining. The register scopes it to mining specifically, not to workplaces generally.
That is the thing to understand about it. It is a different unit from HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, written for a mining context and sitting inside Standard 11. Holding one does not automatically satisfy a requirement for the other — employers name the code.
It carries mining-specific content the general unit does not: establishing and maintaining communication systems with other personnel during the emergency, and reviewing, recording and replenishing first aid resources afterwards.
180 providers, against 2,554 for HLTAID011. It is a specialist unit for a specialist setting.

What it covers
A single unit of competency. It is best assessed in the context of the sector's work environment. Where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment may occur in a simulated environment provided it is realistic and sufficiently rigorous to cover environment, task skills, task management, contingency management and job role environment skills. Assessors must satisfy industry regulations for certification and licensing as well as the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
The four elements of the unit.
- Element 1 Plan and prepare for initial response First Aid
- Element 2 Assess the situation and casualty
- Element 3 Apply initial response First Aid

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same as HLTAID011?
- No. RIIERR205D is written for coal and metalliferous mining and sits inside Standard 11. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the general workplace unit. They are separate codes and holding one does not automatically satisfy a requirement for the other.
- Which one does my mine site want?
- Ask by code. Many mine sites want the RII unit because it is part of Standard 11; some also want HLTAID011. They are not interchangeable by default.
- Is it part of Standard 11?
- Yes, one of the six units in RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set.
- Why only 180 providers?
- It is scoped to mining. HLTAID011 is scoped to everyone, which is why 2,554 providers hold that one.
- Does it expire?
- The statement of attainment does not. Mine sites and the state regulator set their own currency expectations — check with them.
